The first of the therapist is to respect the families by “meeting them where they are”. Parents may have ongoing questions about their child’s development or they may have just received a diagnosis. As the relationship with the family is strengthened, the therapist works to support parents and facilitate understanding of their child, their strengths and who they are as an individual. The therapist works to facilitate the emotional attachment between the child and their caregiver, while keeping in mind the child’s goals and parents’ understanding. This parent-child relationship is essential to the child’s SoCal emotional health and development.
